AMERICANISM

Americanism is the belief in and active support of the principles, ideals, freedoms, and responsibilities that define the United States of America.

In the VFW context, Americanism is more than simply being patriotic. It is about honoring the sacrifices that made our freedoms possible and actively working to preserve them for future generations.

Americanism includes:

  • Patriotism — Showing love and respect for our country, its flag, and its ideals.
  • Respect for veterans and military service — Honoring those who served and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
  • Freedom and constitutional rights — Supporting the liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
  • Civic responsibility — Participating constructively in our communities and democratic institutions.
  • Respect for the American flag — Properly displaying, caring for, and honoring our national symbol.
  • Education — Teaching young people about America's history, government, freedoms, and the sacrifices of previous generations.
  • Community service — Putting patriotism into action by helping neighbors and strengthening our communities.
  • National unity — Recognizing that Americans can have different backgrounds, beliefs, and opinions while sharing a common commitment to the United States.

The VFW's view of Americanism

For a VFW Post, Americanism can be described as turning love of country into service. It means remembering our fallen heroes, supporting living veterans, teaching the next generation, honoring our flag, and helping make our communities stronger.

A strong statement for your VFW website could be:

Americanism is more than displaying the flag or celebrating our nation's patriotic holidays. It is a commitment to the ideals of freedom, democracy, service, and responsibility that make America strong. Through education, community involvement, respect for our flag, support for veterans, and service to others, we help preserve America's values for generations to come.
