Our Vision

To ensure that every veteran is respected for their service, receives the benefits and entitlements they have earned, and is recognized for the sacrifices made by them and their families in defense of our great nation.

Who We Are

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) is a nonprofit veteran’s service organization made up of eligible veterans and service members who have served overseas in combat, conflict, or qualifying military operations. Our membership includes veterans and service members from the Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve components.

For more than 125 years, the VFW has stood as a powerful advocate for America's veterans, service members, and their families.

Our Roots Run Deep

The VFW traces its origins to 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection returned home to a country that offered them little support.

Many came home wounded or ill. There was no comprehensive system of veterans' health care, and the benefits and pensions they had earned were often unavailable. Veterans were frequently left to care for themselves.

In response, these veterans came together to help one another. Local organizations were established in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, and the movement quickly grew. These organizations ultimately united to become the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

Today, the VFW and its Auxiliary have more than 1.6 million members worldwide, united by a common commitment to serve those who have served our country.

A Voice for America's Veterans

Throughout our history, the VFW has fought tirelessly to ensure that America's veterans receive the care, benefits, recognition, and respect they have earned.

Our advocacy has helped shape some of the most important veterans' programs and institutions in our nation's history, including:

ü  Helping establish the Veterans Administration

ü  Supporting the development of our national cemetery system

ü  Fighting for benefits for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange

ü  Advocating for veterans suffering from Gulf War-related illnesses

ü  Helping secure the Post-9/11 GI Bill, expanding educational opportunities for generations of service members and veterans

ü  Supporting legislation to improve veterans' access to quality health care and accountability within the VA

ü  Fighting for improved health care and services for women veterans

ü  The VFW remains committed to ensuring that promises made to those who served are promises kept.

Remembering Those Who Served

Honoring veterans also means preserving the memory of their service and sacrifice.

The VFW has provided financial support and leadership for important national memorial projects honoring America's veterans, including memorials recognizing:

Ø  World War II veterans

Ø  Korean War veterans

Ø  Vietnam veterans

Ø  Women who served in the Armed Forces

Ø  Veterans who were disabled during their service

Ø  Veterans of Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield

These memorials ensure that the sacrifices of America's service members—and the sacrifices made by their families—will never be forgotten.
